After a night of drinking with buddies, a 26-year-old HR executive ended up lying drunkenly beside a canal along Bukit Timah Road. In the early morning hours of Apr 16 last year, Sergeant Andre Ong Jiong Yang and his partner found Jeffrey Yeo Ek Boon covered in mud and leaves on the ground, and they attempted to offer him some help.
Unfortunately, in his intoxication, Yeo did not not want it. He spewed vulgarities at the officers and slapped Sergeant Ong across the face when they tried to help him up. This act of ‘needless aggression’, as described by Deputy Public Prosecutor Stephanie Koh, resulted in Yeo being sentenced to one week in jail.
Koh said Yeo’s behavior showed ‘willful audacity and arrogant defiance’, as he attacked the officer who was merely offering him assistance.
The prosecution will lodge an appeal against Yeo’s sentence. Yeo could have been jailed up to seven years and/or fined or caned for hurting a public servant in the discharge of his duty.
