A 26-year-old Singaporean arrested on Sunday for allegedly possessing an airsoft gun was charged yesterday with unlawfully carrying arms.
At about 12.25am on Sunday, Yang Ziyi was arrested outside the 7-Eleven convenience store at Pioneer Mall after he was reportedly found to have possessed a “Desert Eagle” pistol, Channel NewsAsia reports. The airsoft gun was seized by the police as a case exhibit.
For unlawfully carrying arms, he could face a jail term of between five and 14 years, and be given at least six strokes of the cane. If the accused has been previously convicted of a scheduled offence, he could be sentenced to between five and 20 years’ jail and be given at least six strokes of the cane.
Preliminary investigations reveal that Yang is also reportedly involved in a criminal intimidation case and other drug-related offences. Bail was set at S$60,000, with the accused’s passport to be impounded. A pre-trial conference on the case will be heard on Jul 13 at 11am.
