Remember the man who got arrested on Sunday for causing a security scare at Hougang MRT station? Well, he’s been released on police bail while investigations are underway, according to TODAY. The unidentified 39-year-old allegedly left his luggage bag unattended at the station to run an errand, but his actions unintentionally caused the station to shut down for more than an hour, as police officers were brought in to examine the bag’s contents.

After they discovered the bag only consisted of household items, the police arrested the man for causing public alarm. He was seen being led out of the station in handcuffs around 7.30pm on Sunday.

Law and Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam said the temporary shutdown of the MRT station in response to the incident was the “right thing to do”.

While at a homeland security exhibition on Tuesday, Shanmugam explained, “There have been some questions as to whether we overreacted. But you know, if it had a bomb, people would say, why didn’t you close it. So closing it was the right thing to do.”
