Chinese New Year may be a festive season spent with family, but let’s not forget those among us who may not have loved ones to commemorate the celebrations.
So on the first day of CNY, 25 Malay volunteers organized a get-together in Woodlands for about 300 elderly Chinese who live alone in rental flats. Not wanting them to spend the occasion alone, the volunteers doled out goodie bags and delivered food to the residents during the “community makan session”.
Sembawang GRC MP Amrin Amin shared photos of the event at Block 802, Woodlands Street 81, on Facebook on Sunday, revealing how the group brought chicken rice and bee hoon packets to the Chinese, Malay, and Indian senior citizens who could not walk far. That came in handy since most hawker centers across the island were closed during the long weekend.
According to The Straits Times, 50 motorcyclists from four biker groups assisted with the distributing of food to 100 homes. This marked the second time the charity event was held on the first day of CNY for Woodlands residents, but it was the first time the bikers were involved.
It was also a first for the 30 volunteers who helped to spring-clean the living areas, toilets, and windows of eight flats of the elderly on Sunday before CNY.
At the event, the group was joined by 16 men from local van drivers club Abam Abam Van Singapura and several of their wives, who helped prepare the goodie bags and distribute them to 40 houses for the needy.
Now that’s the Singapore spirit we’d love to see more of.
