The coming of Chinese New Year celebrations used to be akin to the apocalypse, in the manner that folks would have to stock up and hoard their foodstuffs and groceries. It’s always been a period of time where practically all stores operated by the Chinese population will (usually) close shop for the first two days.
But worry no more, because these giant supermarket chains (no, not just Giant hypermarket) have you covered this year.
A spokesman for Sheng Siong told The New Paper that 16 outlets will remain open for the first two days of Chinese New Year from 8am to 6pm, a first for the supermarket chain. In addition, it will also extend operations on the eve of CNY by an hour until 4pm, following customers’ feedback over the years.
“By opening during Chinese New Year, customers can make some last-minute purchases,” he added.
In the spirit of convenience (or competition), other retail giants will also remain open for business.
NTUC Fairprice will have 83 outlets remain open all day on CNY eve, and 25 stores will carry on operating as usual for the next two days after.
The Straits Times reported earlier that all Giant stores will extend operating hours for some outlets throughout this week, while all stores will operate as normal on the first two days of the New Year.
Similarly, Cold Storage will also extend operating hours for some outlets, and only seven outlets remain open 24/7 from January 24th to 29th.
But honestly, people, why resort to last-minute purchases when you can have them ready beforehand?
