Maid assisting with investigations into “unnatural death” of 77-year-old lady in Tampines flat

It was a relatively peaceful Monday afternoon at Block 276 of Tampines Street 22 — until a scream pierced the air.

A 77-year-old lady was found dead in the living room of her flat on the fifth floor of the block, with the police notified at approximately 2:10pm.

Ashaari Hasan Basri had just finished praying in his own flat two units away when he heard the scream. Heading over to the flat where he heard the scream, he spotted — to his immense shock — the lifeless body of his elderly neighbour in a wheelchair.

As reported by The New Paper, Ashaari, stated that there had been a “20-cm long kitchen knife stuck in her throat,” with blood on her clothes and the floor.

In an interview with The Straits Times, neighbours said that the woman – whose name is believed to be Tay Quee Lang – had lived with her husband and their Indonesian maid, who only started working in the house a month back.

Ashaari states that the old lady was very friendly, and while he didn’t know how many children the old couple had, he knows of a son and daughter who both moved out recently upon their respective marriages. The daughter was informed and arrived five minutes after the police.

Currently, the police have classified this as an unnatural death, with the maid assisting with investigations.
