M Ravi suspended from legal practice till certified fit in psychiatric medical report

It’s a troubling past few weeks for prominent human rights lawyer M Ravi, who has been appearing in headlines for all the wrong reasons. After being ordered to stop practising on earlier this month by The Law Society of Singapore due to pending medical review, his practising certificate has been suspended until further order.

The Judge hearing the Law Society’s application for Ravi to submit a medical examination found that they had acted reasonably with good grounds to issue such a direction. His recent antics — going on a dramatic rant at their offices; claiming physical and verbal assault by a counsel — are said to be evidence of impairment of his fitness to practise due to “the hypomanic phase of his bipolar disorder”.

Should Ravi wish to lift the suspension, he would need to submit a medical report by his attending psychiatrist or any other doctors approved by the Law Society, certifying that he is fit to practise.

“The Law Society hopes that Mr Ravi will take this opportunity to seek the appropriate treatment with a view to making a recovery before seeking to resume practice,” the press release concludes.
