Lucky Filipino maid who scored $2.3m lottery prize gets accused of stealing winning ticket

A 44-year-old domestic helper turned into an overnight millionaire back in June when her Singapore Sweep ticket turned out to be the lottery’s first prize, garnering her $2.3 million.

Today however, she’s learned that with great money comes people who’d love to see her crash and burn. An unknown party has lodged a report with the police alleging that she stole the winning ticket, The Straits Times reports.

The maid — who has worked for 14 years for a family in Pasir Ris — had already claimed her prize money and transferred some of it to her son and daughter in the Philippines. A plot of land has also been bought there, where she plans to build a house for her children.

Last month however, the police came a-knocking at the Pasir Ris flat, informing her of the accusation lodged at her. Though she was upset by the turn of events, she cooperated with the police, showing them receipts for the money transfers made and taking them to the Singapore Pools outlet in Tampines where she bought the winning ticket.

The plot thickened when the police revealed to her that the security camera video of her purchasing the ticket had been erased. During the course of their investigation, she has been asked to hand over details of her bank account as well as phone number of her friends.

Her employer strongly believes that she has not carried out any offence, vouching for her honesty. Despite being $2.3 million richer, the domestic helper has chosen to continue working for the family.
