In an announcement warmly received by none, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) have called for a tender to develop Singapore’s next generation electronic road pricing system for an even more efficient method in taxing road users here.
In an effort to overcome the constraints of physical gantries, the LTA now wants to milk motorists out of their cash by utilising Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) technologies to implement distance-based pricing instead of one-off charges. According to their news release, the GNSS system is more “equitable” as motorists will be charged based on the amount of distance travelled on congested roads, so that should be fun.
The next-gen ERP system would also benefit road users with interactive on-board units in their vehicles that can offer real-time traffic information and using e-payments for parking fees, among other planned value-added services, which are reportedly features that nobody asked for.
