This city still doesn’t know how to properly handle the advent of disruptive tech innovations (like Airbnb, Uber, etc) but none have been as annoying and visibly prevalent here as bike-sharing.
In a society that’s not exactly known for its unselfish altruism, dockless bikes continue to plague the landscape via indiscriminate parking. So in a recent week-long enforcement operation across the country, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) impounded a total of 62 bicycles belonging to oBike, Mobike, and ofo.
“These bicycles were found to be causing inconvenience or obstructing footpaths,” wrote LTA in a Facebook update. “[Bicycle Sharing Operators] face a fine of up to $500 for each indiscriminately parked bicycle.”
According to the data, it seems like oBike will be getting the heftiest penalty with 24 of its bicycles impounded — easily $12,000 in fines. Ofo comes at a close second with 22 bicycles impounded ($11,000 fine), and mobike with 16 ($8,000 fine).
“(Bicycle Sharing Operators) should manage their bicycles and ensure that their users park their bicycles responsibly in designated parking spaces,” LTA added.
