Usually when an elderly individual goes missing for more than a day, family members should already expect the worst. In this case however, all’s well that ends well — a 76-year-old man was found after an exhaustive 45-hour search and rescue operation.
Avid hiker Ng Kang Leng had wandered into Dairy Farm Road, planning to hike towards MacRitchie Reservoir last Saturday afternoon, TODAY reports. After getting lost (and facing dying light), he called the police for help around 6.50pm — but couldn’t give specific details of his bearings as it was his first time attempting the route. He did however tell them that he passed by the Eco-Link bridge near Bukit Timah Expressway around 3pm earlier on.
More than 200 officers from the Singapore Police Force, Public Utilities Board and the National Parks Board were deployed to sweep through the Central Catchment Nature Reserve as well as the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve to look for Ng. It was only around 3.40pm yesterday that he was found near Upper Pierce Reservoir.
He was then conveyed to Ng Teng Fong General Hospital for a physical examination. From pictures taken by the Singapore Police Force, he seems to be in pretty good shape for a senior citizen who just spent two nights alone in the dense jungle. What a champ.
