Long Chim chef gets lifetime achievement award from Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants

Later this month, Australian chef David Thompson is heading out to Bangkok to receive a lifetime achievement award from Diners Club at the Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants event.

The down-to-earth chef, who realized that he was no longer interested in French cooking after going on holiday in Thailand, says he still has the same joy in cooking as when he first started, and that he feels very lucky.

“Usually I am rather embarrassed by awards but to receive something as significant as this, voted for by my peers in the industry, does indeed make me proud and grateful,” he adds.

Thompson was responsible for starting a wave of excellent Thai restaurants in Sydney before flying off to London to start Nahm (which earned one Michelin star) and later branching out to Bangkok.

Nahm in Bangkok was named the number one restaurant in the 2014 edition of Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants. Thompson also has a delightful Thai restaurant in Singapore called Long Chim which Coconuts Singapore rave-reviewed here.
