London hosts Singapore Day 2014

London’s Victoria Park will play host to Singapore Day 2014 come March 29.

Organised by the Overseas Singaporean Unit, the event will be hosted by a quartet of homegrown artistes — Chua En Lai, Gurmit Singh, Hossan Leong and Michelle Chong — and features comedy acts by the Dim Sum Dollies, as well as performances by local bands.

The day-long carnival will also showcase works which update Singaporeans living abroad on the latest developments here and relive memories of home.

And what better way to be reminded of Singapore other than through our favourite pastime, food?

Visitors to the event will be greeted by an array of hawker fare from popular local joints, including chicken rice, ‘char kway teow’, Indian ‘rojak’ and ‘teh tarek’.

Participating in his fourth Singapore Day celebrations, owner of Amoy Street’s famous ‘teh tarek’ stall Rafee’s Corner, Mr Rabeek, wrote on the Singapore Day website, “I’m really excited to meet my regular customers in London, and hope they’ll come (to my stall) when they come back.”

Inaugurated in 2007, the annual Singapore Day brings together Singaporeans living abroad, in a bid to keep them emotionally-connected to home.

The event takes place in major cities with a sizeable population of Singaporean residents. Past venues include London, Melbourne, New York, Shanghai and Sydney.
