Local visual artists flesh out 6 local writers’ books into life in Writing the City project

Literary works come to vivid life in this year’s edition of British Council’s Writing the City, where the spotlight gets shone on six of Singapore’s most exciting writers as well as award-winning Brit writer Bernardine Evaristo (Mr Loverman, Hello Mum).

The British Council have also collaborated with video artists, illustrators and visual architects to come up with slick trailers for their books. The likes of local visual creatives such as ClogTwo, Brandon Tay, FROMPAMM, Benjamin Ong and Jillyn Koh were tasked to interprete the writers’ work into creative book trailers.

Among the writers featured this year are Amanda Lee Koe, author of short story compendium The Ministry of Moral Panic and fiction editor at Esquire magazine; comic book author of The Resident Tourist, Troy Chin, and Chinese young adult fiction writer and journalist, Han Han.

Sci-fi lovers will enjoy the short stories penned in Malay by Hassan Hasaa’ree Ali, while poetry readers will delight in works by Tamil poet and short story writer K. Kangalatha, as well as Madeleine Lee, whose poems have been translated into short films and dance productions for festivals around the globe.

Aspiring writers can check out the Writing the City website to get tips on their craft and participate in various activities lined up throughout the year. Be sure to check out the various book trailers and interviews with the writers while you’re at it as well.
