First the long cold spell in January, and now this: the strongest wind gust recorded in eight years — strong enough to decimate several farms and trees in the Lim Chu Kang area.

Wind speed hit as high as 133.3km/h during a thunderstorm last Friday, according to the Meteorological Service Singapore, the strongest wind gust recorded on the islandwide network of wind sensors since 2010. The Straits Times reported that the surge of winds over the north-west area of the island flattened several chicken barns in Chew’s Agriculture, located at 20 Murai Farmway in Lim Chu Kang.

Thunderstorms pelted rain across Singapore on Friday afternoon, with the heaviest volume falling over the western parts of the island around Jurong and Choa Chu Kang. Alarming footage of the raging storm in the Lim Chu Kang vicinity emerged on social media, depicting the extremely hazardous conditions faced by motorists in the area.
