Light sentence for driver who fell asleep behind the wheel and caused one person’s death

A lorry driver who accidentally caused the death of a man who had just survived a minor chain collision minutes earlier is going to jail.

The victim, 25-year-old Rangasamy Balagobi, was driving his company’s van along the Bukit Timah Expressway when he was involved in a minor chain collision, according to The Straits Times.

A colleague had come to assist him and, just as they were standing in front of the van examining the damage, 46-year-old lorry driver Ng Leng Seng, who had fallen asleep behind the wheel, rammed into the van, which in turn ran into Rangasamy and his colleague.

Rangasamy was dragged by the lorry and pronounced dead at the scene, while the colleague “was flung onto the slip road of Bukit Panjang upon impact.” He suffered serious injuries but survived.

Ng, the driver of the lorry, has been sentenced to jail for three months and banned for driving for five years.
