The banyan tree located in front of block 77 Toa Payoh Central collapsed on September 12, damaging several cars.
The large tree known to Toa Payoh residents by its majestic-looking aerial roots has been home to a Buddhist shrine—also destroyed by the fall—since the late 60s.
Legend has it workers attempting to clear the tree for estate development have always met with misfortune—one engineer was even said to have died under his own vehicle in the process.
