Receiving warnings, mandatory community service and more, the students responsible for inappropriate ongoings at the National University of Singapore (NUS)’s orientation camps have been properly punished for their risqué endeavours.
The Straits Times reported that the punished students were involved in organising the orientation camps, including ones for the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and the students’ union. No further details were provided by the university.
Public outcry about the ragging laid upon freshmen in orientation camps across local colleges had been going on for years, but it took a particular apex back in July after an exposé by The New Paper. Mostly humiliating and weirdly depraved, raunchy camp games — like re-enacting an incestuous rape scene — were uncomfortable enough for students to make their complaints public.
As footages of the ragging emerged online, the saga took a major turn when NUS decided to suspend many student-organised orientation activities. Investigations into the “sexualised” activities were conducted, and a disciplinary board was convened.
What they found was pretty damning — students breached rules including by using unapproved items during activities, consuming alcohol beyond designated premises and events and providing false information during investigations, according to The Straits Times.
In any case, NUS students, their parents and the general public are pretty satisfied with the actions taken by the university.
The dissatisfaction came later on when NUS called out The Straits Times over their article, pointing out several inaccuracies. The major gripe the college had was the fact that disciplinary proceedings are still in progress, and it would be better for the media to report on the issue after the process is completed in October.
