Korean actress Lee Yeon Hee charms in Singapore despite agency drowning in controversy

Interviewing A-list stars is a tricky, tricky thing, especially when they’re only there for a brand endorsement.

It’s even more frustrating when the star in question belongs to one of the most controversial entertainment agencies in South Korea, SM Entertainment, which is currently struggling with internal lawsuits and members dropping out of their highest grossing groups.

You want to ask about lotions and creams, but just can’t — not when you’ve got someone with direct access to all the drama. And besides — everyone already knows SK-II and what it can do for middle-aged skin.

But 26-year-old actress Lee Yeon Hee wasn’t picked to be one of the brand’s international ambassadors — yes, out of all those doe-eyed actresses in Seoul — for nothing.

For one, she was perfect. Creamy-skinned, long-legged, strawberry-lipped and not a bit of frizz in her hair perfect. It would’ve been a sin not to discuss her beauty.

And that we did. Sitting relaxed yet elegant in a soft red lace shift, Lee fielded questions that were mostly about her make-up (she never leaves home without lip balm and at least one lipstick) and skincare regimen (do you even need to ask? Clear lotion – treatment essence – face cream – eye cream, all SK-II). She also revealed how she would always find the time to put a daily mask on, even for a short while, and how lots of water and exercise (complete with fast, loud music) helped her maintain her skin and minimise stress.

Once or twice, someone would ask her to comment about other artists, including her fellow SK-II ambassadors, but when this happened, it was always the translator that played the apologetic role, while she put on her best “I don’t know what’s going on” face. She did laugh when asked about the handsome actors on her collab wishlist though, but said it was impossible to pick one, natch.

Here’s something Lee Yeon Hee fans might not already know, though: she’s a big advocate of staying true to oneself, despite the circumstances.

“In order to stay long in the industry, you have to retain your individual character and remain confident,” she said. “Confidence is also to me, a true sign of inner beauty.”
