Knife-wielding Raffles Place robber sentenced to 12 years’ jail and 24 strokes of cane

About two years ago, a bloody knife attack shocked the hundreds of office workers having lunch at Raffles Place, where the assailant stabbed and robbed a man in broad daylight.

On the eve of New Year’s Day, 39-year-old Indonesian citizen Arun was sentenced to 12 years in jail as well as 24 strokes of the cane for armed robbery, TODAY reports.

Arun had purchased a 12.5cm-long knife in the morning of the robbery, and saw 37-year-old Indonesian national Kang Tie Tie near Raffles Place MRT at 1pm. Arun had somehow known that Kang was an authorised courier who travelled to Singapore often to deliver and collect money from clients.

That afternoon in the crowded district, Arun stabbed Kang and made off with his sling bag, containing money in different currencies totalling over $785,000.

Kang chased after Arun and a scuffle broke out at Raffles green. Witnesses helped restrain Arun and provided medical assistance to Kang while the ambulance arrived.

The court passed a heavy deterrent sentence, as the armed robbery was a brazen one.
