Sorry not sorry, we suppose. Radio station Kiss92 FM has since responded to the online clamour over a morning segment that saw its DJs making casual stereotypes about Malays and Indians in Singapore — it was an apology for how their repartee was “misconstrued to mean something (they) never intended”.
Like we said, sorry not sorry.
Some context first — a Facebook post made by Atiq Lukman yesterday went viral after folks were outraged over some banter made during Kiss92’s Maddy, Jason & Arnold in the Morning programme. Racist or not, it’s still pretty shitty to pigeonhole communities based on hackneyed stereotypes (Chinese folks are hardworking, while Malays and Indians and don’t care about work, yadda yadda).
All that outrage boiled over to the point where Kiss92’s Maddy Barber had to issue an apology on behalf of the team. But! They apologised for “any offence taken” and how the conversation was “misconstrued”. Basically, it was a half-hearted apology that didn’t admit that yes, what they said was objectively hurtful.
Netizens didn’t hesitate to call them out on it.
