Kinokuniya’s flagship Singapore store downsizing

Singapore’s largest bookstore Kinokuniya is moving to a new, and significantly smaller, location.

The Business Times (BT) reported Saturday that the beloved bookstore has been asked to move to the fourth floor of Ngee Ann City Shopping Centre, which will reopen in November following renovation work. This means that Kinokuniya, which currently boasts a floor space of about 43,000 sq. ft., will be reduced by 20 percent.

Speaking to BT, store director Kenny Chan said they had no choice but to comply with the reduction as they had no other options — their landlord Toshin Development was unable to find a larger unit for them.

Kinokuniya’s main store at Ngee Ann City has been operating since 1999 and is home to over 500,000 titles.
