Driving under (good) influence: Grab driver offers discounted daily rides to disabled man

A serendipitous Grab meeting resulted in a driver giving a big hand to someone who needed it most.

A passenger named Din called for a Grab ride to take him home after work at 3.20am. When Grab driver Melvin Poh arrived to pick him up, he noticed that Din’s fingers were amputated on one hand, and that he was clutching a walking stick. Poh chatted up his passenger during the ride, and asked him about his job.

Through their conversation, Poh learned that Din had suffered two strokes and that he had been jobless for eight years before being certified by his doctor to be able to perform light duties. After several failed interviews at other companies, he landed his current job as a security guard. Even so, money has been tight for Din, who draws a salary of $65 a day. As he is not given a transport allowance and can’t risk major falls, he has to spend up to half of his daily wage on ride-hailing services to get home when he finishes work at midnight.

As fate would have it, Poh was the perfect person to chat with. The kind Samaritan started to pick Din up from work every day for just ten dollars a ride to lighten his financial burden. Poh wasn’t able to pick Din up every day, however, since he has other work commitments. Eager to extend this helping hand, he took to social media to look for other drivers who could help him out with this.

The response was overwhelming — many responded with praise for Poh and his altruism, and donations also started to pour in. So far, Poh has been able to raise a total of $180 for Din.

Melvin ended his Facebook post by reminding everyone that “a little kindness goes a long way.” We couldn’t have said it better ourselves.
