Two Chinese men, aged 41 and 50, who kidnapped 79-year-old mother of Sheng Siong’s chief executive officer Lee Hock Chee, had initially demanded a ransom of $20 million but later agreed to $2 million after negotiations.
They were arrested by the police within 12 hours from the time Lee made the report.
According to the Singapore Police Force (SPF), Lee’s mother was last seen in Hougang area on the morning of Jan. 8. A call was then made to Lee demanding the sum in exchange for his mother back.
Lee then alerted the police and officers from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and the Police Intelligence Department (PID) immediately responded by conducting investigations to find out the location of the woman.
Following the instructions of the kidnappers, Lee placed the bag containing the $2 million in Sembawang Park and left the area. The victim was then released in Seletar West Camp area on Jan. 9. The police continued with their investigations and the two suspects were subsequently arrested in the area of Hougang and Ang Mo Kio.
The incident has been classified as kidnapping under the Kidnapping Act and the kidnappers will be charged in court on Jan. 10. If convicted, the offenders may face the death penalty or life imprisonment with caning.
