Khoo Teck Puat Hospital shooter charged in court; will face death penalty if convicted

The man who sparked chaos last Saturday night at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital when he shot and wounded a police officer has been charged in court, The Straits Times reports.

23-year-old Muhammad Iskandar Sa’at had been arrested for motor vehicle theft the day before the incident and was escorted to the hospital in Yishun after complaining of chest pains.

In one of the hospital’s examination rooms, Iskandar tried to make a run for it and struggled with the police officer handling him, 31-year-old Mohammad Sadli Razali. The suspect managed to snatch Sadli’s .38 inch calibre Taurus revolver.

Two paramedics from Hope Ambulance Service then rushed in to help Sadali, who managed to wrestle the Iskandar to the floor. During the violent struggle, Iskandar allegedly fired three shots, wounding the policeman in his left thumb and right foot.

Nurses and security guards showed up and helped to pin the suspect down. Iskandar was later sedated and placed in a hospital bed, restrained with flexi-cuffs, while Sadali was conveyed to Tan Tock Seng Hospital for hand micro surgery.

Earlier today, Iskandar was charged under the Arms Offences Act, and may very well face the death penalty if convicted. The case will be mentioned again on Jun 29.
