Living in an apartment overlooking the Keppel Harbor and Sentosa island may soon be attainable for the middle-class — at least some of us.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong last night announced the government’s plans to build 9,000 homes in the area, including a yet-to-be-revealed number reserved for public housing, as part of grand plans for its Great Southern Waterfront development.

The Keppel Bay area is well-known for its multi-million-dollar condominium apartments and Keppel Island — where you’ll find more than a few luxury yachts berthed.

The homes will be built on a 44-hectare plot of land currently occupied by the Keppel Club golf course, which has two years left until its lease expires, Lee said during his annual National Day Rally speech announcing upcoming government policies and development plans.

The 9,000 public and private homes will be surrounded by even newer developments slated for the Great Southern Waterfront, an area that stretches from Gardens by the Bay to Pasir Panjang and encompasses 30km of coastline.

Included in the plan is additional office space for the nearby business center in Pasir Panjang, known as the Mapletree Business City, where companies like Google and Unilever have their offices.

New recreation areas are planned for Pasir Panjang, after the two old electrical substations situated there are moved underground as well as on Brani Island after the shipping port located there moves to Tuas in the west.

On Brani Island, a new family-friendly resort similar to Downtown East in Pasir Ris will be built, Lee said. The government is still seeking ideas to liven up the space currently taken up by the power stations.

Meanwhile, nature lovers lucky enough to get hold of one of the 9,000 planned homes can also look forward to trekking from West Coast Park to East Coast Park as there are plans to connect the two. Nature and heritage trails on Sentosa are also expected to expand.
