Imagine hearing the news that someone who was found dead at the foot of your flat turned out to be a friend of yours. Double that surprise with the revelation that said friend died during an attempt to climb out the kitchen with loot from your flat.

In a karmic case from last week, a 25-year-old man is believed to have fallen from the eighth story of an HDB block in Yishun after he allegedly broke into his friend’s flat and purloined $7,000 worth of items. The New Paper reported that the Singapore Civil Defence Force was alerted to the foot of Block 512C along Yishun Street 51 in the early morning last Friday, where the man was found injured. The suspect died at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital shortly after getting conveyed.

According to The Straits Times, residents weren’t even aware of anything unusual that morning. Even the owner of the flat that was allegedly broken into only knew the details of the incident when the police arrived at his door at 10am.

The fallen friend

The flat owner — Lim, 35 — informed ST that the cops came knocking on his door last Friday morning to ask if his belongings were missing. It was then he realized that his gold chain and iPhone 6 were missing and that both were found in possession of his deceased friend.

According to Lim’s statements to the media, the suspect was once a close family friend who would often visit the house to play with his children. But during the visits, Lim noticed that some money would go missing from his wallets and began distancing himself from the man, Shin Min Daily News reported.

The night before the incident itself, the man apparently dropped by Lim’s flat to gift him several bottles of wine. The following day, the man texted Lim to ask if he tried out the wine. Hours later, the man allegedly broke into his flat and fell to his death with the loot.

Shook by the death of his friend and the alleged burglary, Lim has since made it a point to lock all the windows of his house before calling it a night.
