Joo Chiat goes private

The neighbourhood of Joo Chiat is set to become Singapore’s first all-private-property constituency in view of the upcoming demolition of four remaining HDB blocks under the Selective En-bloc Redevelopment Scheme (SERS), media reports said.

Its Minister of Parliament (MP) Charles Chong said: “Within the next two or three years, all the four blocks will be resettled and Joo Chiat will be the only constituency where it is 100 percent private property – condos and landed property – which makes it a bit different from the other constituencies.”

Located along East Coast Road, the blocks comprise 129 housing units. The 48-year-old buildings are also home to one percent of the constituency’s population of 37,000 residents.
