Another day, another incident at Jurong East’s JEM shopping mall, proving that its curse is as strong as ever even in the new year.
On Saturday evening, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) responded to a fire that broke out at the basement of the mall about 8pm. The fire had involved contents of a storeroom on Basement 3, which were quickly extinguished with a water jet.
According to the SCDF, no injuries were reported from the incident — five staff working at the mall had self-evacuated, and probably had no other reason to doubt the JEM curse again.
The “crown jewel in the west” has been hit by repeated cases of flooding and fires, as well as a false ceiling collapsing, a glass door shattering and an 11-hour power failure since it opened in 2013.
