Suspecting his wife was having an affair with her supervisor, 38-year-old Zheng Xianghua repeatedly stabbed his wife at his rented room in Tampines in 2014.
The man then went to a neighbouring block, where he stabbed and slashed himself, sitting on the parapet between the eight and ninth floors before getting coaxed down by the police.
The Chinese national has since been jailed for nine years for killing her, pleading guilty to culpable homicide not amounting to murder, The Straits Times reports. In court, a government psychiatrist revealed that Zheng suffered from pathological jealousy and severe depression.
Zheng and his wife — also a Chinese national — came to Singapore separately to work, with both of them rented different rooms for work convenience. 37-year-old Wang Xueyan rented a place in Marsiling while Zheng rented a storeroom at a Tampines flat.
The truck driver first suspected that his wife was having an affair after she started wearing make-up and receiving compliments at work. He got even more worked up when he found out from his wife’s roommate that Wang had bought a mobile phone and was secretly contacting her supervisor.
On Dec 16 in 2014, a quarrel broke out between the couple after sex at Zheng’s rented room. The man stabbed her repeatedly with a knife he had bought — which was intended for a confrontation with Wang’s supervisor.
