A 45-year-old married father was sentenced to jail yesterday for having underage sex with a teen he had been in a “sugar” relationship with since November 2016.

Adrian Tan Lee Guan pled guilty to three counts of having sex with a minor under the age of 16, landing himself with a 24-month prison sentence, Yahoo News reported. The sugar baby had been 15 years of age when they first met on sugar-dating website Seeking Arrangement.

The arrangement they had was that Tan would pay a monthly allowance of S$1,600 for her companionship (and sexual intimacy). He knew that she was 15, as she told him her age while chatting on WhatsApp.

Details of their carnal interactions were also revealed in court:

  • They first met on Dec. 15, 2016, where Tan took her out for dinner at Pan Pacific Hotel before a night out at Capella Hotel in Sentosa. After bringing the girl to the hotel’s cascading swimming pool, he asked the girl to perform oral sex on him, and she did.
  • That same night, while sending her to Nex Shopping Centre, Tan stopped his car near a bus stop in Bishan and asked her to perform oral sex on him once again. She agreed.
  • Three days later, the girl met up with Tan in Hougang to collect her S$1,600 allowance. The man then drove her to a multi-storey carpark to once again ask her to perform oral sex on him. It was then that he asked her to move to the back seat of the car, where they had sex.

Presumably overwhelmed by it all, the minor informed her school about the encounter and a police report was lodged against Tan.

‘No qualms’

In court, Tan’s lawyer argued that the encounters did not involve any force or coercion and that the girl had falsely declared her age on the sugar-dating website, Yahoo reported. Tan was also said to have been suffering from an adjustment disorder with depressed mood at the time when the offences were committed — he had been facing increasing credit card debts.

The prosecution however countered that Tan had “no qualms” degrading and sexually exploiting a girl three times younger than him. It was also pointed out that he spent lavishly on the girl despite claiming to have financial debts.

Tan had been drawing a salary of S$10,000 month as a business development director, but has since lost his job. His wife has also filed for a divorce, forcing him to move to a rental flat.

Sugar dating platforms such as Seeking Arrangement and The SugarBook have come to national attention of late, with the authorities currently keeping “a close eye” on such sites and its users.

“Not only do such sites encourage (young women) to demean their own sense of self-worth, they also expose them to the risk of being exploited and abused,” said the Minister for Social and Family Development Desmond Lee in Parliament earlier this month.
