A man suffering from intermittent explosive disorder was sent to cool off in jail for a year after two pretty horrible incidents that involved him being a violent jackass.
28-year-old Gabriel Kok Khen Foon appeared in court yesterday to face sentencing for repeatedly hitting a man on his face using a metal dustbin cover in 2012, The Straits Times reports. He received an additional week in jail for causing hurt by poking a lighted cigarette into a motorist’s upper lip along the Central Expressway (CTE) during a traffic altercation in 2014.
On May 6 in 2012, Kok and his friends were waiting for a cab outside Central Mall after a drinking session when they noticed two other men — Indian nationals Seth Kapil and Shetty Vinaykumar Jayakumar — trying to flag down taxis down the road from them.
Kok then told Seth to get into the queue, but Seth replied that there was none. The quarrel escalated quickly into a scuffle, and Kok’s group surrounded the duo, kicking and punching them. Using a cover from a dustbin nearby, Kok hit Shetty once on the head and Seth repeatedly on the face, to the point that he lost consciousness.
In the aftermath, Seth suffered cuts on his face and left middle finger, as well as a broken nasal bone.
The attack only stopped when Kok heard someone shouting at him to run away, and his group of friends left the scene. A passer-by however managed to follow Kok and fingered him to the police.
Two years later, Kok got into another altercation with his friends. On Oct 9, 2014, Kok flashed his car’s high beam repeatedly at another motorist — Jereme Quek Han Fei — along the CTE.
Both cars stopped before the Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3 exit, and Quek confronted Kok about his tailgating and high-beam flashing. Kok responded by asking why Quek refused to give way and why he jammed his brakes repeatedly.
One of Kok’s passengers tried to mediate the quarrel, but Kok went ahead and snatched Quek’s bluetooth earpiece and threw it onto a grass patch. Kok then tried to drive off by Quek blocked his way by standing in front of the car and took photographs of it. He even called the police, repeatedly stopping Kok’s car from leaving.
Kok then started smoking, and he made rude gestures at Quek’s face before using the lit cigarette to poke the latter on the left of his upper lip.
In court, it was revealed that Kok had paid $3,000 to Seth in compensation, and that he was taking medication for his intermittent explosive disorder. It wasn’t the first time Kok got into trouble with the law, having previous convictions of affray, rioting and disorderly behaviour.
