Bribing your way to a driving license? Perhaps that could work in another country – but not rule-abiding Singapore. A 41-year-old man learned that lesson the hard way when he was slapped with a jail sentence of three weeks on Thursday (June 8) for his attempt to bribe his driving tester.

On Feb 22, Chinese national Yang Qiang tried to curry favor with his driving tester at the Singapore Safety Driving Centre – but he did not so do with flattering words. Instead, he let cold hard cash do the talking. Two hundreds dollars, to be exact. In exchange, he wanted a passing grade on the practical test for a Class 3 driving license.

Unfortunately for him, the tester rejected his bribe and the case was handed over to the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB), reports Channel NewsAsia.

“CPIB takes a serious view of any corrupt practices and will not hesitate to take action against any party involved in such acts,” CPIB stated.

Anyone convicted of this can be sentenced up to five years in jail, fined up to $100,000, or both.
