A man has been sentenced to four months in jail for filming a video of his then 21-year-old daughter in the shower in July 2016.

The 48-year-old Malaysian man — whose name cannot be revealed due to a gag order — pleaded guilty to insulting the modesty of his biological daughter in the toilet of their Toh Yi Drive flat. They were living in the same rented room at the time.

The Straits Times reported that the man had tied a black mobile phone to the pipe below the basin inside the toilet. When his daughter discovered the mobile phone, she removed it and discovered the phone was in record mode. She stopped the recording and played back the video, which captured her nude body in the shower. She then saw a few other videos capturing her father’s face while adjusting the camera angle.

When confronted, he admitted to filming her for the past two weeks, and she angrily deleted the videos before handing the phone back to him. She moved out to stay with her colleague after the incident.

The accused also admitted he had 20 other clips of her bathing in his phone, but said he misplaced the device. He said the videos were for his personal viewing.

On April 25 this year, officers responded to a case of attempted suicide at Block 840 Jurong West Street 81, where the man was subsequently arrested. The accused is currently suffering from depression.

A second charge was taken into consideration during the sentencing after he had used threatening words and behavior towards his daughter during his attempted suicide. He could have been jailed up to a year and/or fined or both for insulting her modesty.
