Jail for man who blackmailed teen over nude photo after acting as woman on internet

A 25-year old man was sentenced to eight weeks in jail for threatening to show a nude photo of an 18-year old male to the authorities if he was not paid $800. Mohammad Zareen Wahid pleaded guilty to a charge of criminal intimidation, The Straits Times reports. 

He obtained the nude photo of the teenager via getting to know each other on social media platform Tagged in late August last year. The two exchanged phone numbers and began to communicate through WhatsApp — but wait, throughout all of this, the victim was under the impression that he was talking to a woman. 

In early September last year, the teenager sent Zareen a photo of his naked lower body. On the very same month, Zareen threatened the 18-year old to show it to the police if he did not pay the aforementioned amount. Less than a week after the victim made a $480 transfer to Zareen’s account, he lodged a police report.

Zareen said in court where he appeared without a lawyer that he was facing “serious financial issues” at the time of offence. Extortion within a month of meeting someone, well then, he acted quickly did he.

If not the eight weeks he will be facing, Zareen could have been behind bars for up to two years and fined.
