It’s official — Singaporeans are too emotionally attached to the internet

Singaporeans are the most emotionally attached to the internet in the world, according to a report released by Tata Communications yesterday.

Connected World II analyses how people use and connect with the internet, capturing responses from six emerging and developed countries: France, Germany, India, the US, the UK and Singapore.

It notes that as many as 78 percent of Singaporeans feel a negative emotion when without internet access, significantly more than the global average of 64 percent. In addition, 42 percent of Singaporeans use the internet for over six hours a day, the second highest percentage worldwide after India.

Other interesting facts about Singaporeans’ addiction to the internet: the average surveyed Singaporean believes they can only survive 7.3 hours without internet access, while a whopping 38 percent of Singaporeans would forgo alcohol in favour of internet access. 27 percent are willing to sacrifice TV.

Despite Singaporeans’ ‘commitment’ to the internet, many still don’t quite get how it works. According to the report, 62 percent mistakenly believe that the internet has unlimited capacity, and 64 percent believe the internet is “owned by everyone”.
