An outcry about ang mohs disrespecting the Singapore flag — by actually using it as a frickin’ tablecloth at a party — has revealed a bigger twist.
The party was hosted by a junior Israeli diplomat.
The Embassy of Israel in Singapore has since apologised for the “deplorable behaviour” of one of their junior staff members.
“The Director General of Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has instructed that requisite strong disciplinary procedure will be adopted against the individual after his meeting with the Singapore authorities, reflecting the severity with which Israel views this incident, especially in light of the close and friendly relationship between Singapore and Israel,” it said in a statement.
Photos of the incident popped up online earlier this week, depicting revellers putting the Singapore flag on a table, while other items were propped up on top of it. According to All Singapore Stuff, the pictures were taken at the Levelz Condo along Farrer Road.
It’s a serious offence to let the Singapore flag even touch the ground, according to the Singapore Arms and Flag and National Anthem Rules — so you can imagine the high levels of disrespect shown when it was used as a tablecloth.
In response, Singapore’s own Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a stern reminder for all diplomats and foreigners to abide all laws and regulations.
“The misuse of the Singapore flag is a serious offence,” they wrote in a statement. “We welcome the Israeli Embassy’s apology and assurances that it will undertake the necessary disciplinary actions against the individual concerned. All persons, including diplomats and foreigners in Singapore, must respect and abide by our laws and regulations.”
