‘Irredeemable’ — a comic in which a fallen superhero sinks Singapore — gets big screen adaptation

Fresh off the current wave of superheroes questioning the morality and ramifications of their superheroics (Batman V Superman, Civil War), the time is ripe for a film adaptation of Irredeemable — a comic book series that asks ‘What if Superman was hopelessly insane?’

It’s a wonderfully twisted premise that imagines an invincible alien/superbeing — The Plutonian — going off the deep end and slaughtering the very people he once protected. As you can imagine, it’s a very, very dark series in which the world’s greatest superhero just snaps and turns into the world’s greatest supervillain — a study in how moralities can warp in the face of reality.

One of the greatest moments of ultra villainy happens in the first volume itself. In an emergency conference of the United Nations, a representative from Singapore offends The Plutonian (by lying), and as a result our whole city-state gets pummelled into the sea. Grim, but pretty awesome.

Now that we hear that an adaptation of Irredeemable will make it to the big screens, we really, really hope to see that scene unfold. In even better news, the director behind Oscar-winning flick The Big Short (as well as many Will Ferrell vehicles like Anchorman, The Other Guys and more) will be making it. We’ve no idea when it’ll be released but we await the day when we can watch familiar landmarks get destroyed by a fallen superhero before sinking into the ocean.
