Last week, an act of vandalism surfaced when 26-year-old undergraduate Haikal Latiff noticed the word “terrorist” scribbled over an illustration of a Muslim woman wearing a hijab. He was walking past Parc Seabreeze condominium on Joo Chiat Road around 10pm on Thursday (June 1), when he spotted the offensive graffiti where the upcoming Marine Parade MRT station was under construction, and later tweeted it.
“I was kind of shocked that … a cartoon would invite a remark like that,” he said, according to Channel NewsAsia. “It made me think about how Islamophobia is taking shape, even in Singapore. We hear about it in news stories about foreign countries, and it feels very far away. But when you witness something like that happening in Singapore, it really hits home.”
The Land Transport Authority stated that the contractor had filed a police report on Friday (June 2) afternoon.
Investigations are ongoing.
