Ah, millennials — back at it again with the self-entitlement. Over the course of the Hari Raya Aidilfitri weekend, a post whining about the money given out in green packets went viral, and the internet reacted accordingly.

In an Instagram story that went up sometime on Saturday, someone thought himself/herself to be a hero for the kids by chiding those who are still giving out $5 or less in their green packets.

“In this age and time, what can those kids actually do with that??? Your justification that during ‘your time’ people give like that is okay la, but right now, that’s just not being nice,” the person wrote, adding that the kids should have something to enjoy in this annual affair.

“Let that amount in the green packet be sick not basic”. Oh, the cringe.

Just as a helpful reminder, the religious holiday celebrated by Muslims worldwide is to mark the end of the holy fasting month of Ramadan. Over here, Muslims don colorful traditional attires and go around visiting the homes of friends and family in a celebration of food, forgiveness, and tightening relationships.

Elders may give the young’uns a token sum of money, and it’s important to note that this tradition is no way mandatory. The money inside green packets are to be given out in a manner of ikhlas (sincerity) — you can give as much or as little as you want to according to your financial means.

TL;DR: the annual affair is a time to spend time with your family, not demand money from them.

While folks bayed for blood and asked for the identity of the person who wrote the ignorant post on Instagram, the original poster said that exposing the individual is not the point. And we have to agree.
