The historic district of Potong Pasir was expected to be fought over by three parties this coming general election, but as the nominee roll confirmed yesterday, it looks like it’ll be a traditional two-way fight.
And what a fight it’ll be — People’s Action Party’s Sitoh Yih Pin will be defending his seat from the grasp of Singapore People’s Party’s Lina Chiam. She’ll be trying to wrestle back the SMC back into the hands of her party, whose husband and iconic veteran opposition politician Chiam See Tong served as Member of Parliament for 27 years until 2011.
Lawyer Tan Lam Siong had previously expressed his intention to run as an independent candidate to contest for the Potong Pasir single member constituency seat, but has since pulled out from the race.
In a post on his blog, the former National Solidarty Party secretary-general stated that a chance encounter with a visibly fatigued Mrs Chiam had profoundly affected him. Knowing that this election will be her last before she retires with her husband, he decided not to contest — but will continue to serve the residents of Potong Pasir.
“Instead, I will lead my team to show our support for Mrs. Chiam at her rally and hope she succeeds to regain Potong Pasir SMC and continue Mr. Chiam’s dedicated service to its residents,” he wrote. What a top gent.
