Ever since the release of E L James’ Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy — which has since become a worldwide phenomenon and got itself a movie adaptation — some kinky impact has made itself known in Singapore in the form of increased sales of sex toys featured in the book.
In a report by The New Paper, adult sex toy store owners revealed that their products have been flying off shelves in recent years, and the increased popularity can be attributed to Fifty Shades Of Grey.
A toy used in the book, Ben Wa balls — marble-sized spheres inserted into the vagina for sexual stimulation — enjoyed increased sales, according to online store Alice Maple who now sell 40 to 50 sets per month as compared to only 10 previously.
Another prominent tool used in the book — leather handcuffs — have also seen higher demand in stores, along with other BDSM products such as handcuffs, floggers and bed restraints.
One store owner even plans to bring in official Fifty Shades merchandise into his catalogue. Such is the impact of the book series, and such are the voracious sexual appetite of Singaporeans.
