More funding for those who can’t afford lawyers

Senior Minister of State for Law Indranee Rajah has revealed that the goernment is looking into pouring more funding into the Law Society’s Criminal Legal Aid Scheme.

This means that more people will be able to afford a lawyer to represent them in non-capital cases.

However, Ms. Rajah warns that the government should approach the matter carefully as the funds will come from a finite pool of taxpayers’ money.

She recommends that the United Kingdom (UK), where criminal legal aid funding ended up in the hands of wealthy criminals whose accounts had been frozen, be made an example and that Singapore develops a system that is sustainable.
