A lot of people were not happy campers with SMRT after a signalling fault temporarily halted train services — hands up if you’ve been annoyed by recent rush hour delays resulting from all the signalling checks — on the entire North-South Line and a portion of the East-West Line.
It was bad. Real bad. Train services were extremely delayed, bus stops offering free shuttle services were packed like sardines, and traffic on the highways and CBD-area roads were completely jammed.
But in the midst of all the exasperation, one compassionate lady offered a ray of kindness to another human being. While stranded waiting for her on-call cab to pick her up at a taxi stand in Jurong East, she spotted an elderly woman nearby waiting in vain — all the vehicles arriving at the cab stand were either previously booked taxis or private cars.
So she asked for the woman’s destination, which turned out to be Yishun — the same place she was heading to — and offered to share her cab.
Here’s where it gets even better.
After she explained their situation to the driver, he halted the $16 meter along the way and restarted it to give them a discount. The kind cabbie said it was because she had helped the elderly woman and, besides, she was heading to the hospital to visit her mother.
Thumbs up all around.
