It seems Giant may not be doing so well in Singapore, what with the recent closure of two stores in Bukit Panjang and Jalan Tenteram. According to TODAY, the hypermarket chain will also shutter its massive two-story VivoCity outlet in early 2019. The space, which has housed Giant since 2006, is rumored to be taken over by another supermarket brand: NTUC FairPrice.

It was a photo showcasing a list of Giant outlets and their closing dates circulating on social media about two weeks ago that got members of the public asking questions. But a Giant spokesperson did not confirm if the information in the photo was accurate or not.

Employees told the publication that the management team announced the VivoCity store would close after Chinese New Year in 2019. The company revealed that its workers at the branch would be posted to other outlets under the Giant brand or under its parent company Dairy Farm, which includes names like Cold Storage, Guardian, and 7-Eleven.

Apparently, Giant is also reviewing the future of three other outlets — at The Grandstand on Turf Club Road, Block 512 on Bishan Street 13, and Block 118 on Aljunied Avenue 2 — and considering factors such as store performance and lease renewals.

However, with a brand as big as Giant, you probably won’t have to worry about it bowing out of our shores anytime soon, since it’s got about 60 stores scattered across the island. Although if you’re anything like us lazy shoppers, you probably do most of your grocery purchases online anyway.
