In the latest development in the Land Transport Authority’s (LTA) spirited, impassioned war on illegal parking, the administration plans to introduce higher fines for repeat offenders and CCTV cameras at 40 more locations.
According to their press release, around half of all illegal parking traffic notices issued between 2011 and 2014 are committed by repeat offenders; thus the implementation of a tiered fines regime that will kick off on Jan. 1 next year.
Their detailed annex outlines that motorists who receive a second Notice of Traffic Offence within 12 months will have to pay a higher tier of fines according to the severity of their of infringement.
Encouraged by the efficiency of CCTV cameras currently active at 30 locations earlier this year, LTA has announced installation of surveillance devices at 40 more locations. Starting from the first quarter of next year, Collyer Quay, Tiong Bahru Road, Woodlands Street 82, Selegie Road and many more will see CCTVs operating on a 24 hour basis.
“Since the implementation of CCTV cameras, we have observed improved traffic conditions along some stretches of roads which used to suffer from obstruction caused by indiscriminately parked vehicles, such as along Beach Road, Bishan Road and Pasir Panjang Road,” says LTA Group Director for Transportation and Road Operations Dr Chin Kian Keong. “Besides improving traffic flow for cars and other road users, our bus commuters have also benefitted from smoother traffic along these roads.”
