Heng Swee Keat spends Father’s Day with COVID-19 in Berlin

Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat is down with COVID-19.

Heng, 61, announced yesterday that he caught the COVID bug in Berlin while on a work trip on Saturday and is currently isolating. He assures the public that his symptoms so far are “not serious” thanks to vaccination and booster jabs.

“Tested positive for COVID-19 in Berlin yesterday, despite keeping our masks on and avoiding crowds throughout the trip,” he wrote.

He is currently out on a Europe work trip where he was in London to attend the London Tech Week event and flew to Berlin on Thursday. Switzerland was supposed to be his final destination.

Heng apologized to organizers of fintech conference Point Zero Forum for not being able to attend it tomorrow.

He had met with German Federal Minister of Health Karl Lauterbach on Friday to “reaffirm” Singapore’s “excellent relations” with Germany and discussed COVID-19 research.

This is probably the worst Father’s Day for Heng, who, fortunately, managed to call his family back home.

“Hope to bounce back soon. What an unusual Father’s Day to be quarantined in a hotel abroad,” he added.

Germany is reporting more than 57,000 average cases in a day for the past week, while Singapore is reporting more than 3,000 cases. Singapore has been living with lesser restrictions with the return of large-scale events while Germany is in talks about making masks compulsory again indoors.
