Hazy conditions taper down into moderate range, but probably not for long

If you noticed how it looks like outside today, the hazy view has significantly gone down, with Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) levels sitting comfortably in the moderate range.

Over the past couple of days, 24-hour PSI ratings often breached into the higher end of the unhealthy range (101-200). Today, asthma sufferers rejoiced when the latest update by the National Environment Agency (NEA) displayed an 80-100 range instead, while the more immediate 3-hour PSI stands at only at 62, as of writing.

It might only be a brief respite however; moderate to dense haze is still persisting in central and southern Sumatra with hazy conditions expected to stay for the rest of today.

“The 24-hour PSI for the next 24 hours is expected to be in the low end of the Unhealthy range, and may enter the mid-section of the Unhealthy range if denser haze from Sumatra is blown in by unfavourable winds,” says NEA.

Since our hazy days are here to stay, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has kicked off two initiatives yesterday evening, where 29,000 high-tech AIR+ Smart masks and 6,000 micro ventilators will be distributed at 60 senior activity centres islandwide by the weekend. The rest of you will just have to do with your usual ninja-chic N95 masks.
