Hazy conditions over eastern and north-eastern regions due to Pasir Gudang bushfire

If you’re living in the eastern and north-eastern municipalities of Singapore, you’d be familiar with the sudden onset of haze in recent days. You were probably surprised too that the rest of the country aren’t affected.

Channel NewsAsia reports that some residents in Sengkang, Hougang and Serangoon have reported prevailing conditions of haze and the strong smell of smoke yesterday morning.

A couple days before that, residents of Pasir Ris, Tampines and Bedok complained about similar circumstances, baffling the National Environment Agency (NEA) on the development of fragmented hazy conditions.

Yesterday, Minister for the Environment and Water Resources Vivian Balakrishnan provided an answer why — a fire at the industrial town of Pasir Gudang in eastern Johor Bahru.

NEA has contacted the Malaysian authorities, who’ve since initiated efforts to stamp out the bush fire.
