Happy birthday to the giant pandas at the River Safari — Kai Kai, the male panda, celebrates his ninth birthday today, while his female counterpart Jia Jia turned eight on September 3. So the keepers threw them a birthday bash, complete with honey-flavoured ice cakes topped with their favourite apple and carrot slices. The treats, which took four days to make, weigh in at about 7kg together.
Although, judging from this video below, it looks like Jia Jia wasn’t too keen on her cake.
Anyway, September is an extra special month for the park, ’cause both pandas arrived on September 6, four years ago. They recently attempted to create panda babies during their second mating season in April this year, but both natural and artificial insemination proved to be unsuccessful after Jia Jia displayed pseudo-pregnancy behaviour for a couple weeks before returning to normal life.
But hey, third time’s the charm, right?
